An IS Clinical Project Manager is the team leader for clinical projects that deal with information systems development, design and evaluations. The IS Clinical Project Manager is the contact person for both research or project participants and workers as well as outside sources that may be contributing to the project or requesting information about the research project.

  • As an IS Clinical Project Manager, the individual must be familiar with both the clinical aspects of the research as well as the information technology aspects of the project. This unique combination means that usually an IS Clinical Project Manager will have medical training and experience as well as a strong background in computers and informatics.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are needed for a project manager. He or she should be able to work with various participants to problem solve and develop appropriate timelines and deadlines for research components. Excellent organizational and motivational skills are necessary to coordinate all the different aspects of the research project.
  • An IS Clinical Project Manager should also be familiar with research design and development. Often the project leader will be responsible for reporting out results to various stakeholders and interest groups so an ability to speak publicly and prepare written information on research results is important. The IS clinical project manager usually also has experience in working as a team leader or in supervisory roles.
  • The IS Clinical Project Manager may be required to work additional hours on various aspects of the research when timelines are not met. He or she may also be required to travel if the research is being conducted in several different hospital or healthcare facilities.

Career Requirements

  • An IS Clinical Project Manager will require a Bachelor of Science, Arts, and RN or related degree as a minimum standard. Many projects will require Masters level training in addition to several years of clinical work experience.
  • An IS Clinical Project Manager will also have to have experience in a supervisory role in conducting trails or research projects and may also have to have experience in databases, various software programs and in medical informatics. Certification in health informatics may be required. Management training such as healthcare administration or business management is also considered an asset.

Job Outlook

  • There is a steady and average demand for IS Clinical Project Managers in medical settings. Most projects will hire from staff members currently working in the hospital or healthcare facility but occasionally individuals with expertise or specialization in the study area will be hired from outside of the facility. The role of IS Clinical Project Manager is seen as a stepping-stone to more permanent management and leadership positions.
